Bowden is on the QEII in Red Deer County, about 45 km south of Red Deer, where the first section of Highway 2A ends. The area was first called Lone Pine, after a well-known stopping place on the Calgary to Edmonton Trail, and the most widely accepted story says a local surveyor suggested his wife's maiden name for the town. Passenger trains arrived in 1891, and Bowden became a village in 1904 and a town in 1981.
During the Second World War, RCAF Station Bowden was home to No. 32 Elementary Flying Training School, a site that later became the Bowden Institution. Today the Bowden Pioneer Museum fills the old curling rink, about 300 students attend Bowden Grandview School from kindergarten to grade 12, and the annual Bowden Daze Pro Rodeo comes each summer. There is a nine-hole golf course, and Red Lodge Provincial Park is nearby.
In the 2021 census, 48.3% of Bowden's occupied homes were built between 1961 and 1980, the highest share of any town, village or hamlet Elite Home Services covers, and 62.1% are single-detached. Treated water comes from the Mountain View Regional Water Services Commission into the town's reservoir and is tested twice daily.
