Furnace repair
Who repairs furnaces in Mountain View County?
Elite Home Services, a local, family-owned heating, cooling and plumbing company that has served Mountain View County for more than 18 years. The team repairs and maintains furnaces in Olds, Didsbury, Carstairs, Cremona, Water Valley, Innisfail, Bowden, Three Hills, Trochu, Torrington and Crossfield, with emergency repair available 24/7.
One customer needed a thermocouple changed on a holiday and wrote that the serviceman was there within the hour, and that they were not overcharged for the holiday. Another wrote that the problem turned out to be exactly what was suggested on the first call, and it was fixed in less than an hour.
Maintenance is the other half of the job. A furnace that is looked after tends to run more reliably through the coldest months, and small problems get caught before they turn into a no-heat call.
Before you call: quick checks
Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and its batteries are not dead.
Look at the furnace filter. A badly clogged filter can make a furnace overheat and shut itself off.
On a high-efficiency furnace, check the white plastic intake and exhaust pipes on the outside wall. Snow and frost can block them and stop the furnace.
If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm goes off, leave the house first and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.

What a furnace repair call checks, part by part.
A typical high-efficiency furnace, taken apart. These are the parts a technician checks when a furnace will not heat, and what each one does.
Keep scrolling: the doors come off first.
A high-efficiency furnace breathes through two white PVC pipes. If snow or frost blocks them outside, the furnace shuts itself off.
Starts first and draws combustion gases out through the exhaust pipe. The furnace will not light until it is running properly.
Carries the burners' heat into the house air while keeping combustion gases out of it. A crack here is a safety problem, not just a comfort one.
The igniter lights the gas at the burners. When ignition fails, the furnace tries, gives up, and the house gets no heat.
Proves the flame is lit. A dirty sensor can let the burners light and then shut them off a few seconds later.
Opens the gas to the burners only when the rest of the start-up checks out. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
Runs the start-up sequence and flashes an error code when something is wrong. Note the pattern before you call: it helps narrow things down.
Moves the warm air through the ducts. A worn motor, a failing capacitor or a dirty wheel cuts the airflow.
The easiest check of all. A clogged filter can make the furnace overheat and shut itself off, so look at it first.
Older furnaces with a standing pilot use a thermocouple in place of the flame sensor. One customer needed exactly that replaced on a holiday. A simplified drawing of a typical high-efficiency furnace: layouts vary by make and model.

★★★★★We needed a thermocouple changed out in our furnace. It being a holiday I wasn't sure what I would be looking at for service or price. The serviceman, Gavin, was here within the hour. He was very professional and he handled our problem quickly and efficiently, and we weren't overcharged for the holiday, like a couple other places insisted on doing. We are 100% fully satisfied and would highly recommend their service to anyone. A1 Customer service.

Why does my high-efficiency furnace keep shutting off in winter?
There are a few common causes. A clogged filter can make the furnace overheat and shut down, a dirty flame sensor can stop the burners from staying lit, and snow or frost can block the white plastic intake and exhaust pipes outside. If those checks do not fix it, call 587-328-0194 for a repair.
Is it worth repairing an older furnace?
It depends on the furnace and on the repair. Elite Home Services handles both furnace repairs and replacements, so both options can be talked through before anything is replaced. One customer had a consult during the winter, made a plan to replace the furnace, and had the new one installed later.
What should I do if my carbon monoxide alarm goes off?
Get everyone out of the house right away, leave the door open behind you, and call 911 from outside. Do not go back in until emergency responders say it is safe. Once it is safe, have the furnace and any other gas appliances checked before you use them again. Call 587-328-0194.
