Didsbury sits beside Highway 2A near the QEII, at about the halfway point between Calgary and Red Deer: the Town puts it 45 minutes from Calgary and 40 minutes from Red Deer. Olds is the next town north and Carstairs the next town south. Didsbury takes its name from Didsbury in Manchester, England, and its first settlers were Mennonites from Pennsylvania, granted the land around it in 1894.
The Canadian Pacific built a station here in 1904, and Didsbury became a town on September 27, 1906. The 1907 "Old Red Brick School" is now the Didsbury Museum, a Provincial Historic Site since 1997 and once home to the first free library in Alberta. In August, the Didsbury FCA Rodeo, the Clifford Scott Tractor Pull and the Annual Didsbury Parade share one weekend.
Most homes here are detached houses, 71.7% in the 2021 census, and 43.8% of occupied homes were built before 1981, with 13.2% dating from 1960 or earlier. In older houses the ductwork is often the original, even after the furnace has been replaced, which is where furnace and duct cleaning earns its keep.
