Town in Mountain View County

Who services furnaces and air conditioners in Carstairs?

Elite Home Services, a local, family-owned heating, cooling and plumbing company that has served Mountain View County for more than 18 years. In Carstairs that covers furnace repair and replacement, air conditioning and ductless mini-splits, tank and tankless water heaters, humidifiers, plumbing and drains, with emergency repair available 24/7.

Carstairs is on Highway 2A, 48 km north of Calgary, with Didsbury and Crossfield as its closest neighbours. It began life as a loading platform on the railway between Calgary and Edmonton: when the Calgary and Edmonton Railway arrived in 1890, surveyors set aside a siding here. It is named after Carstairs, Scotland. Carstairs became a village on May 15, 1903 and a town on September 1, 1966.

The Scottish roots still show. The Carstairs Heritage Festival and Parade of Kilts celebrates them (in 2026 it ran on May 30), Beef & Barley Days fills a July weekend with fireworks, a pancake breakfast and a parade, and the CARA Rodeo runs in July. The Carstairs Heritage Centre is both the town museum and a Travel Alberta accredited visitor information centre.

Much of the town is new. In the 2021 census, 45.7% of occupied homes in Carstairs had been built in 2006 or later, and 79.9% are single-detached houses. Newer homes usually have high-efficiency furnaces that vent through white PVC pipes on an outside wall, and those vents need to stay clear of snow.

Gas, water and weather

Who runs the utilities in Carstairs, and how cold it gets.

Natural gas: ATCO GasCarstairs is on ATCO Gas South's municipal franchise schedule with the Alberta Utilities Commission, under a franchise agreement between the Town and ATCO Gas and Pipelines.
Water: Membrane-filtered river waterThe Town says its water comes from the Anthony Henday Water Treatment Plant at Innisfail, which uses membrane filtration. The plant is on the Red Deer River.
Weather: Olds stationJanuary averages -8.7°C and July 15.6°C, from Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 climate normals.

What that means for your home

  • Newer high-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC pipes on the outside wall. Drifting snow or frost can block them and shut the furnace off, so check them after a storm.
  • A brand new house and a 60-year-old house need different things. A newer system mostly needs regular maintenance; an older one may need a plan for replacement before it fails.

He was very professional and he handled our problem quickly and efficiently, and we weren't overcharged for the holiday, like a couple other places insisted on doing. FAQ

Carstairs: straight answers.

Do you service newer homes in Carstairs?

Yes. In the 2021 census, 45.7% of occupied homes in Carstairs were built in 2006 or later. Elite Home Services maintains and repairs the high-efficiency furnaces, air conditioners, tankless water heaters and humidifiers common in newer homes, as well as older systems. Call 587-328-0194 or send the quote form.

Where does Carstairs get its water?

From the Anthony Henday Water Treatment Plant at Innisfail, which uses membrane filtration, according to the Town of Carstairs. The plant, on the Red Deer River, is run by the Mountain View Regional Water Services Commission, which also supplies Olds, Didsbury, Innisfail, Bowden and Crossfield.

Why does my furnace shut off during a snowstorm?

On a high-efficiency furnace, a common cause is snow or frost blocking the white PVC intake and exhaust pipes on the outside wall. Clear them gently, then turn the furnace off and back on. If it still will not run, or keeps shutting down, call 587-328-0194. Emergency repair is available 24/7.
