Three Hills takes its name from three prominent hills to the north of town. It sits on Highways 21 and 583 in Kneehill County, 128 km northeast of Calgary, with Trochu about 15 km north and Torrington about 26 km west-northwest. A post office opened in 1904, coal mined in the area supplied mainly the railway until 1949, and in 1912 the town moved to its present site on the rail line. It became a village that year and a town in 1929.
Prairie College held its first class here on October 9, 1922, with eight students. The Kneehill Historical Museum fills six buildings and a set of railcars, and the Cruise Weekend car show has filled early June since 1981, typically drawing more than 8,000 visitors. Three Hills School teaches about 490 students from kindergarten to grade 12, and the nine-hole golf course sits on Three Hills Creek.

The town runs its own regional water treatment plant, drawing from the Red Deer River and piping treated water 22 km to town, and it supplies Trochu too.
