Carstairs is on Highway 2A, 48 km north of Calgary, with Didsbury and Crossfield as its closest neighbours. It began life as a loading platform on the railway between Calgary and Edmonton: when the Calgary and Edmonton Railway arrived in 1890, surveyors set aside a siding here. It is named after Carstairs, Scotland. Carstairs became a village on May 15, 1903 and a town on September 1, 1966.
The Scottish roots still show. The Carstairs Heritage Festival and Parade of Kilts celebrates them (in 2026 it ran on May 30), Beef & Barley Days fills a July weekend with fireworks, a pancake breakfast and a parade, and the CARA Rodeo runs in July. The Carstairs Heritage Centre is both the town museum and a Travel Alberta accredited visitor information centre.
Much of the town is new. In the 2021 census, 45.7% of occupied homes in Carstairs had been built in 2006 or later, and 79.9% are single-detached houses. Newer homes usually have high-efficiency furnaces that vent through white PVC pipes on an outside wall, and those vents need to stay clear of snow.
