Olds sits where Highway 27 meets Highway 2A, 5 km west of the QEII, about 90 km north of Calgary and 61 km south of Red Deer. Settlement began in 1890 where the railway reached the sixth siding out of Calgary, and Canadian Pacific officials named the townsite after George Olds, the railway's longtime general traffic manager. Olds became a village in 1896 and a town on 1 July 1905.
Olds College was founded here in 1913 and is known for its agriculture technology programs. The Olds Historical Society runs the Mountain View Museum and Archives in the former AGT building on 50 Street, the third weekend of September brings Oldstoberfest, billed as the world's first and only Bavarian Rodeo, and Olds Fashioned Christmas has run since 1993.
The houses span the decades. In the 2021 census, 25.9% of occupied homes in Olds were built between 1961 and 1980, 17.2% in the 1990s and 4.9% from 2016 to 2021, and 61.2% are single-detached. An older house may be on its second or third furnace while a newer one has a high-efficiency unit venting through PVC pipe, and Elite Home Services works on both.
