Trochu sits at the junction of Highways 21 and 585 in Kneehill County, about 15 km north of Three Hills. The Town puts Calgary an hour's drive southwest and Red Deer 50 minutes northwest, with the Red Deer River valley 18 km away. It is named for Armand Trochu, a Frenchman who arrived in 1903 planning to raise horses. His St. Anne Ranch added a post office in 1906.
The settlement moved up the hill from 1909, when word came that the Grand Trunk Pacific would run through, and Trochu became a village in 1911 and a town in 1962. The St. Anne Ranch, southeast of town, is now a Provincial Historic Resource. The Trochu Arboretum grows hundreds of varieties of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals, the museum on Arena Avenue keeps the presses that printed the local paper, and in a 2009 contest the town won the World's Largest Golf Tee, 40 feet tall.
Trochu's homes are among the oldest in the area. In the 2021 census, 26.7% of occupied homes were built in 1960 or earlier and 39.5% between 1961 and 1980, and 10.5% needed major repairs. Natural gas is ATCO's, and water comes from the Three Hills regional plant on the Red Deer River.
